The Politics of VSU
Mood:  a-ok
Most of you would know that I am a representative in the Swinburne Student Union this year. After a gruelling election week last year the left finally took over the management of the Union for 2005. Seriously it was about time that Swinnie students got rid of the right wing, ineffective, University administration arse lickers representatives of the past. Not only did they boot out JN and SD but they also got rid of some of the crazy fucking extremist religious nuts we had on Council. Good shit really.

Anyhow one of the big campaigns that have been running is our anti VSU campaign or as we have termed it the ASOL (pronounced arsehole) campaign. If you are unfamiliar with what this is all about read on my friends...

You would be hard pressed to find a student who has not enjoyed one of the fun activities that the Swinburne Student Union runs throughout the semester. Anything from funky bands, roaming performers, comedians, belly dancers and karaoke (just to name a few) have all been enjoyed by each and every one of us during our time here at Swinburne. Most students would also have grabbed a free feed provided by the SSU or accessed the many services we provide such as the student diary, student loans, legal advice, advocacy or the night bus service. Unfortunately all of this is currently under threat as the Federal Government moves to cut funding from student organizations like the SSU.

What is ASOL All About?

Anti student organisation legislation (or VSU) has been introduced into the House of Representatives by none other than the man who brought you the HECS fee increases Doctor Brendan Nelson. The legislation as it stands will effectively cut funding from student organistions from the 1st of January 2006. This will have serious repercussions on students and not just because the free fun stuff will go but also because student organisations defend your rights and collectively organize to ensure that the University and the State and Federal Government do not shaft students when formulating policy, setting fees or directives in the teaching and learning environment.

There have been several attempts by the Liberal Government to introduce anti student legislation and whilst they were unsuccessful, they were quite clever in ?selling? the idea to the public. They termed the legislation ?Voluntary Student Unionism? in order to focus the discussion on the area of freedom of association. The SSU supports the basic human right of freedom of association however this rhetoric of freedom of choice that the Liberals cleverly employ is a farce, as a University like Swinburne does not have equitable access, equitable policy or governance structures or sufficient resources and these factors effectively decreases students choice not increase it. Our position is that by permitting universal membership of student organisations one is not reducing individual choice. and the reason is two fold.

Why is Universal Membership Good for Students?

Firstly student organisations are more like local councils. Each member of the community pays rates to their local council and by doing so is able to access a range of services and facilities. Whilst we do not use all the services all of the time we benefit by way of being able to access essential services when we need them at a much reduced cost when compared to a user pays by service model (VSU is a user pays service model).

Student organisations work in much the same manner. We all pay a relatively small fee (relatively small when compared to the services student organisations provide) and each and every one of us has access to these services when we require it. Anything from legal advice and support, access to interest free and no credit check student loans, student media like Tabula Rasa and the radio station 3SSR and free fun stuff can be accessed via your student organisation. For example as a student you may have had a couple really bad semesters because of family problems and failed at least 50% of your subjects. In this case the University will ask that you attend a hearing where a panel will decide if you are able to remain in your course. In this situation the Swinburne Student Union provides a professionally trained advocate to represent you at the panel hearing (with your consent). The advocate has experience in how to put your case forward to the panel and they also ensure that your rights are maintained and that the University adheres to its own policy on such matters. Whilst you may only require this service once in your time here at Swinburne it is reassuring to know that it is available on each of our campuses because you have universal membership in the Swinburne Student Union.

This is why Universal membership is a better model than the user pays system where if you have the money to pay you can access the service (e.g. fun stuff, night bus, advocacy, clubs and societies) and if you do not then you simply go without.

Why Is Student Representation Essential?

Each year students elect their representatives in a range of portfolio positions. Representation is extremely important because it gives a voice to students on a range of board and committees within the University.

A working example of the type of outstanding work student representatives do is clearly highlighted when considering the re-marking of assignment or other pieces of assessment. Say you received a lower mark for a piece of assessment than you believe your work deserved and wanted to have someone else take a look at your work and provide an assessment of it. Under current policy (that student representatives on the APPC fought hard for and won) you can ask that an independent assessor re-mark your work. If the independent assessor marks your work higher the higher mark stands. If it is lower than the initial mark than your initial mark stands. Extremely student friendly policy with all areas covered in the students favour. This is just one example of many of the value of student representation. We must protect our rights and ensure that the University continues to adequately fund the Swinburne Student Union (this year we have had a $300,000+ funding cut). The services and representation that the Swinburne Student Union provides are absolutely essential. The fun stuff run throughout the semester allows campus culture to be built and makes for a memorable university experience as such is also important. We as students must speak out against what the Government is doing as it is not in our interests to lose our student organisations.

Kind of Stuff that will go under VSU!

Advocacy (where we stick up for you)

Student representation & Activism (where students are elected each year and stick up for all of us on University board and committees and to the State and Federal Government)

Free legal advice

Night Bus Service

Radio station 3SSR, Tabula Rasa & Swin TV

Subsidised catering

Free printing

Free food, entertainment & giveaways

Clubs and Societies

Student Insurance (so if you hurt yourself on campus you are covered)

Student Loans

Student diary & yearly calendars

Comfy lounges so that you can chill out

Microwaves and eating places (so you can save money by bringing your own lunch in)

Protection against on campus bullying and harassment. Counseling, career advice housing and part-time employment

Free tea and coffee

That pretty much sums it up in a nutshell. Bad shit really. We have had a bit of success with at least one senator from the coalition party (Liberals and Nationals) saying they wont support the legislation. Another in Tassie is getting cold feet and if they too decide to vote against it the legislation won't have the numbers to get through. YIPEE!

More on this later gaters.

Now Playing: National Day of Action
Hello Comrades

Well at least some of you are comrades! Attended the NDA on teh 28th of April 2005 and had an absolutely awesome time. Check out the photos below.

Having fun at the festival! Bita, Ben, Umang, Adrian, Petra and myself!

Some of the first Swinnie student to arrive at the rally! We were a wee bit early so Adrian kicked off some chants ... VSU No Way We're Gonna Fight It All the Way ... Get the drift ...

My personal favourite! A few of us just chillin out and you guessed it enjoying the festival over a beer or two ...

Stared off our march through the city after some inspiring speakers! About 5,000 students attended in Victoria alone. What a fucking awesome turnout.

Shot of Swinburne banner just before the march.

The Acting Exec Officer in the Union getting into it me thinks!

Filling in the Gaps
Mood:  cheeky
Hello

It has been a long time between blogs. I knew this would happen, it always happens. I start a diary or whatever and then after a few days I get really lazy or well in this case just really busy and dont write as often as I should. Though I am sure this is all about to change as I have actually started writing again and will try to do this regularly this time.

So to fill everybody in on what has been going on.

I have started back at Uni and was elected as the Education Vice President of the Swinburne Student Union. A mamoth job it is turning out to be! Though I am loving it. The shananighans at the Union certainly keep you on your toes and though the job is highly stressful it is also immensly statisfying.

It has been a fucking long hard year this year. The Federal Government (ie the scum bag rotten fucking liberals) are trying to shut down student unions. They have had this on the agenda for at least a decade but now that they have control of the Senate from July they are pushing their fucked up agenda through. Well they think they are ... We ie the students are not going to take this laying down and so far we have managed to get the over-whelming support of the student body (across the country) and the entire higher education sector to boot. More on this later ...

Aside from that I have been rather busy raising my gorgous little girl. She is growing so fast and every minute of the day that I am with her is an absolute delight. I really am rather surprised at my feelings towards her. I never knew I could love a little human being so much. She has changed my life for the better and I am so glad that she is around.

My partner Casper is doing well too. Our relationship is as strong as ever and I think I have found my soul mate.

Well it is rather late and lateline starts soon so I am going to sign off for today. Will post more tomorrow.

Sorry for the jumbled ramble ...

Lets Play Catchup Again
Mood:  don't ask
Hello Everybody

Twas a good kind of day today in the most part. Had my final day of classes for the year and got my marks for the subject. The overall mark was a high distinction and I am delighted by this result. I studied Support Community Action this semester and the new skills gained will come in pretty handy with the looming anti-vsu campaign.

Over the past couple of days both Casper and myself have been organising invitations for Oceans first birthday party. What started out as a small family/friends affair has resulted in 80 invitations going out. Its going to be huge by the looks of it which really is not to my liking. Too much food to cook and way too much mess to clean up. But I am so looking forward to her first birthday. Its been such a wonderful experience watching my little baby grow up and seeing her develop. She is walking now and this is so exciting. Hearing her say her first words was absolutely amazing and she continues to grow and amaze me every minute of every day. I love her more than I could ever think was humanely possible.

My friend Sarinda from Uni is going to Sri Lanka to visit his family over summer. I am so going to miss him. He really is a legend. He jets off on Friday and is not back until February which really sucks. But I am glad he is going to visit his family as he must miss them dearly while he is studying here in Australia.

My other friend Svetla is going home to Bulgaria in December sometime. This so really sucks. I have known Svetla for some years now and she is one of my very best friends. I can not imagine what it is going to be like without her here. I love her company and will be very sad when she goes. She is going to apply for residency in Australia and I hope that she comes to live here real soon.

Well better get back to the cooking or we will all starve tonight. Speak to you all soon.

Luv Vicky

Lets Play Catchup
Mood:  cheeky
Well it has been one hell of a few days really. I have been bloody busy with a whole heap of stuff.

Firstly, I made up with Andrew. He loves me again and the world is wonderful. This is real good news as I really like Andrew.

Went to a 21st of Saturday night and met a whole lot of crazy people. Crazy in a good way that is. After that got together with the gang again for another Saturday night out. It was pissing down rain but that did not damped our spirits one little bit. After a bit of a discussion we decided to check out the Spiegeltent. We did have to wait in line for about half an hour but it was worth it. Aside from the fact that the Spiegeltent absolutely rocks we made some new friends waiting in line. They were from Cairns (just moved to Melbourne). The new crew were Michael, Sarah, Erin and Tammy. Spent the night all together and had a rocking time.

The Spiegeltent for those who have not a clue about it is a really unique venue. Spiegeltents are hand-hewn pavillions used as travelling dance halls and wine tasting marquees since the early 20th century. There are only a handfull of these unique and legendary `tents of mirrors' left in the world today. Built of wood, mirrors, canvas, leaded glass and detailed in velvet and brocade, each has its own personality and style. The most beautiful of the last remaining Belgian `mirror' tents, The Famous Spiegeltent, was built in 1920 by master craftsmen Oscar Mols Dom and Loius Goor. This Grande Dame has spent her lifetime at the bequest of festivals and village fairs throughout Europe and beyond, playing host to the world's greatest cabaret performers and
musicians. The tent is really gorgeous and the performs were absolutely amazing. The trapeze artist was so sexy and I was mesmerised throughout her act. I have not ever been to a place like it and have got Oceans grandpa babysitting every second Saturday so that I can go every second week until it leaves our shores.

Seriously people if you are into a crazy and arty night. This is really the place to be. We are definately going back for more Spiegel.

Once Spiegel closed in the wee hours of Sunday we went down Swanston Street for a Souvlaki. Seriously by this time I was tired. It was 5am afterall and had to be up by 6am to play with baby! Lucky for me though Casper got up (as I was seriously comatised) and did the morning shift. I got a sleep in until 10am then he went back to bed till 4pm! Somehow I felt a little ripped off the on the sleep thing. But is was worth the fun night out.

Sunday was very laid back which was good. Today I spent the day cleaning and shopping. I really needed some new sneakers so went out and bought a pair. They are pretty comfortable and cost under $100!

Well I had better go soon as Casper wants to use the computer. We always seem to want to use the fucking thing at the same time.

Will be back tomorrow people.

Sleep tight little lovelies.

xxx

Bush is a Wanker
Mood:  irritated
Well really first we have John Howard elected and then the Americans go and vote for George W Bush. Seriously this world is getting darker by the minute. As you can probably guess I am not impressed by these two wankers winning government again. This is really fucked up and we the people will suffer for another four years I suspct.

My friend Andrew is pissed with me I think. We got our wires crossed on Saturday night and he eneded up trying to find the gang in the city when we were all on the train home. Really sucked that the communication thinggie did not work well. Maybe it was cos I was a little pissed and did not understand a word of what anybody was saying. All I could really think about was trying to find a hot dog stand (love em when I have had a few to drink) but I could not find any. Got on the train instead for the long and boring journey home. Anyway so sorry Andrew. I did not mean to run off. Please forgive me gorgeous one.

We did have a great night on Saturday. The gang came out to play and we ended up at this cool little Irish pub in a city laneway. Twas a gorgeous night and we had a ball. Gotta do it again real soon.

I spent the day at Uni today. Nearly finished classes for the year thank god. I don't have any exams this semester but my friends do the poor things. They are stressing badly and I really hope that they all do well and can chill over summer.

Well gotta go and have some dinner. Me starving as usual.

Love Hugs

Vicky

The Journey Begins
Mood:  chillin'
Hello!

I was going to say hello everybody but I doubt very much that anyone is actually reading my blog! No I am not being pessimistic (though Petra is reading it over my shoulder at the moment) but really folks this is my first entry and who the hell could give a rats ass that I am blogging away?

I have been reading other peoples blogs for some time now and thought that I would give it a shot. I am hoping that it goes better than my diary entries (have not done one for about four years). Well I always have good intentions but I never get around to putting something in the diary on a daily basis.

Anyway as this is on line I am hoping that I will actually post stuff up regularly (notice that I said regularly not daily).

I am still learning how to use the blog tools so bear with me until I can get the site looking a bit better.

I am going to check out the editing features so hopefully by tommorow this site will have some piccies and other stuff for you to check out.

Keep smiling.
